Your home gets too hot in summer and your heating bill stings in winter. An air conditioner solves both problems. Modern split air conditioners cool your home on warm days and heat your rooms in winter with an efficiency of 300 to 500%. That means: for every euro of electricity you put in, you get three to five euros of heat back. Anteas advises independently of brand, installs with F-gas certification and gives you an honest picture upfront of what you'll gain — and what you won't.

A split air conditioner is no longer just a clunky box that cools. It's a compact climate system that cools in summer and heats in winter — with an efficiency your central heating boiler can't match. According to TNO research, 85% of Dutch households with an air conditioner also use the system for heating. On average 118 days per year, six hours a day. Installation typically takes one day. You don't need to modify your radiators or underfloor heating.
Which type of air conditioner suits your home and situation? Our free, no-obligation quick scan gives you clear advice within 48 hours — including an estimate of costs and savings.

One outdoor unit, one indoor unit. The most popular type in the Netherlands according to Techniek Nederland. SEER up to 10.3 and SCOP up to 5.2. Installation costs: €1,600 to €3,250 all-in. Ideal for one room, such as the living room or bedroom.

One outdoor unit connected to two to five indoor units. Each room can be controlled independently. From €3,000 for two rooms. Ideal for family homes.

A monoblock air conditioner sits in the wall, without a visible outdoor unit. Handy for apartment buildings (VvE) or when an outdoor unit isn't possible. Cost: €1,400 to €2,250 all-in.

You can buy an air conditioner anywhere. But the difference lies in the advice upfront and the service after. Anteas does three things most installers don't:

For a home with energy label A or B, the heat demand is low enough to heat with a split air conditioner. Cooling in summer comes as a bonus.
No room for a large heat pump installation? A monoblock air conditioner or compact split unit offers climate comfort without major renovation.
During the day your air conditioner runs on your own solar power. In summer, when your panels produce the most and the air conditioner is needed most. Combine with a home battery for maximum self-consumption.
With a multi-split system you can cool and heat the living room, bedrooms and study separately. One outdoor unit, multiple indoor units.
You don't have to replace your central heating boiler right away. An air conditioner can work as a supplement: the living room heats with the air conditioner, the rest with your existing system. This already reduces your gas consumption.
From first contact to a working system we go through four steps. Average lead time: two to three weeks.
You fill in the request form. We look at your home type, floor area and wishes. Within 48 hours you have an honest first recommendation — including an estimate of costs and suitability.
An Anteas advisor visits and assesses the location for the indoor and outdoor unit, checks the electrical connection and calculates the required cooling capacity. You receive a final proposal with a fixed price.
Our F-gas certified technicians install the system. Indoor unit, outdoor unit, pipework, electrical connection and refrigerant charge. For a single-split this typically takes one working day.
After installation you receive a full explanation of the controls, the app connection and the maintenance schedule. We set the system to your preferred temperature and draw up the noise calculations.

The cost of an air conditioner depends on the type of system, the brand, the number of rooms and the complexity of the installation. Below is an honest guide per type. After a quick scan you receive a final fixed price. Single split: €1,600–€3,250 all-in Multi-split (2 rooms): €3,000–€5,550 all-in Multi-split (3 rooms): €4,000–€6,500 all-in Monoblock (without outdoor unit): €1,400–€2,250 all-in Important: there is currently no ISDE subsidy available for split air conditioners. Air-to-air systems do not qualify at RVO. More about the exact cost breakdown on our page what does an air conditioner cost.

More and more Dutch people use their air conditioner as their main heating or as a supplement to the central heating boiler. No surprise: at Dutch winter temperatures averaging 3–8°C, a good split air conditioner delivers three to five times more heat than the electricity it consumes. More efficient than any central heating boiler. In concrete terms: heating with an air conditioner costs an estimated €550 per year in electricity for an average terraced home. By comparison: around €1,500 in gas. That's a saving of around €950 per year, depending on your home, insulation and rates. Technically, an air conditioner is an air-to-air heat pump. The difference from an air-to-water heat pump: no hot tap water, no radiators or underfloor heating. But also: no major renovation and lower purchase costs.
Getting an air conditioner installed isn't complicated, but there are rules. The outdoor unit must comply with noise standards: a maximum of 40 dB(A) at the property boundary in the evening and at night. Placement is permit-free in most cases. On the ground the unit may be a maximum of 1 metre high and 2 m². On the facade up to 5 metres high. Do you live in an apartment building with a homeowners' association? Then you need approval for changes to communal areas. And importantly: installation may only be carried out by an F-gas certified technician. That's a legal requirement. More details on our page getting an air conditioner installed. New under EU 2024/573: the EU bans refrigerants with a GWP above 150 in new monoblock air conditioners from 1 January 2027 and in new split air-to-air air conditioners (≤12 kW) from 1 January 2029. R32, currently the most widely used refrigerant, falls under this. Milieu Centraal already recommends R290 (propane) as a future-proof choice.
